Balangay Festival: A Celebration of Butuan’s Ancient Boats and Golden Friendship

May 19, 2024

The Balangay festival is a cultural and religious festival that is held every May 19 in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte, Philippines. The festival commemorates the arrival of the early migrants who settled in the Philippines on board the balangay boats, which are ancient wooden watercrafts that were used for trade and exploration. The festival also celebrates the declaration of the excavated balangay as National Cultural Treasures in 1987.

The festival features various events that showcase the history, heritage, and craftsmanship of Butuan and its people. Some of the highlights of the festival are:

• The Balangay Boat Building Competition, which is a contest where participants construct miniature replicas of the balangay using traditional methods and materials.

• The Balangay Fluvial Parade, which is a procession of decorated balangay replicas along the Agusan River, accompanied by music and prayers.

• The Balanghai Festival Street Dancing Competition, which is a colorful and lively performance of ethnic dances that depict the culture and rituals of Butuan.

The name of the festival comes from the word “balangay”, which means “friend” or “pal” in Cebuano. The festival aims to promote Butuan as the city of golden friendship and as a tourism and investment destination.
