Fountain of Youth (Rakuh-a-idi Spring)
Fountain of Youth, Batanes is a natural spring pool that is located in Mahatao, a municipality in the island of Batan in the northernmost province of the Philippines. It is also known as Rakuh-a-idi Spring, which means "wide pasture" in Ivatan, the native language of Batanes. It is one of the hidden gems and attractions in Batanes that tourists should not miss when visiting the province.
The Fountain of Youth is believed to have healing properties and to make people young again. This is why it is also called the Spring of Youth. The water comes from the mountain and is cold and clear. The pool overlooks the beach and affords a stunning view of Mount Iraya, a dormant volcano that is the highest point in Batanes. There is also a grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes and a waterfall near the pool.
To get to the Fountain of Youth, you need to travel for about 45 minutes by tricycle or private van from Basco, the capital town of Batanes, to Diura Fishing Village. From there, you have to hike for about 30 minutes along a path that cuts through the site of a pre-Hispanic settlement. The hike is easy and scenic, but you should wear comfortable shoes and bring water and food. There is no store in the area, but there is a toilet and bathroom with running water near the pool.
The best time to visit the Fountain of Youth is during the summer season, from March to May, when there is less rainfall and more sunshine. You can also catch a spectacular sunset from the pool, as it faces west. You can enjoy swimming in the pool or having a picnic lunch at the large nipa hut nearby. You can also learn more about the history and culture of the Ivatans, the indigenous people of Batanes, who once lived in this area.
